Zwischen 1830 und 1930 war die Blütezeit des Salpeters, der in der Atacamawüste (Chile) abgebaut und nach Europa transportiert wurde. Für die wachsende Bevölkerung Europas war dieses „weiße Gold“ ein wichtiges natürliches Düngemittel, während es für Chile die Möglichkeit bot, seine Ökonomie und Industrie zu entwickeln. Produktion und Handel von Salpeter (Nitrat) stellten ein Abenteuer dar, an dem Unternehmer, Wissenschaftler, Techniker, Politiker, tausende von Arbeitern und ihre Familien beteiligt waren. Heute zeugen Häfen und Geisterstädte in der trockensten Wüste der Welt (Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO) von diesem enormen transozeanischen Unternehmen.

Im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojektes aus der Exzellenzinitiative Pakt für Forschung und Innovation untersuchen wir die Wechselwirkungen der beiden ökonomisch aufeinander angewiesenen Wirtschaftszweige Bergbau und Schifffahrt am Beispiel Salpeter. Mit Hilfe intelligenter multimedialer Technik erwecken wir das Abenteuer Salpeter virtuell zum Leben.

The period from 1830 to 1930 was the heyday of nitrate, which was mined in the Atacama Desert (Chile) and transported to Europe. For the growing population of Europe, this “white gold” was an important natural fertilizer which at the same time offered Chile a means of developing its economy and industry. Nitrate production and trade represented an adventure in which entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, politicians, and thousands of workers and their families all took part. Today harbours and ghost towns in the world’s driest desert (a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site) testify to this vast transoceanic undertaking.

Within the framework of a research project of the Joint Initiative for Research and Innovation, we are investigating the relationship between two interdependent branches of the economy – mining and shipping – as exemplifi ed by the nitrate business. With the aid of intelligent multimedia technology, we will bring the nitrate adventure to virtual life.

Entre 1830 y 1930 se vive el apogeo del ciclo salitrero extraído en el desierto de Atacama (Chile) y transportado a Europa. Para la entonces creciente población europea, el “oro blanco” se convertiría en un abono imprescindible para sus suelos. Por otro lado, la explotación salitrera dio la posibilidad a Chile de desarrollar parte de su economía e industria. La producción y el comercio del salitre (nitrato) originaron una aventura en la cual se embarcarían empresarios, científi cos, técnicos, políticos y miles de trabajadores mineros y su familias. En la actualidad puertos y ciudades salitreras abandonadas en el desierto más seco del mundo, son testigos de aquel enorme emprendimiento transoceánico. (algunas de estas ciudades son Patrimonio de la Humanidad-UNESCO)

En el marco de un proyecto científi co del pacto para iniciativa de investigación de excelencia e innovación, es que investigamos los efectos y las consecuencias económicas en las dos ramas dependientes en el caso del salitre: Minería y navegación. Con la ayuda e implementación de técnicas de multimedia inteligente reactivamos la aventura del salitre en el espacio virtual.
